Sports Injuries
What sports injuries occur in the feet?
Any number of injuries can happen to your feet and ankles when you play sports. Common issues include:
-
Ankle sprain, strain, or fracture
-
Achilles tendonitis
-
Plantar fasciitis
-
Neuroma
-
Broken bones
-
Stress fractures
If you have symptoms such as swelling, pain, tenderness, or numbness, it’s time to visit the doctors at West Morris Foot and Ankle. Foot injuries do not have to be debilitating to require treatment.

What is a stress fracture?
A stress fracture occurs when your muscles become too tired to absorb impact. The bone takes on too much of the shock of impact, which causes a tiny crack. You usually notice pain in the area of the stress fracture, primarily when you perform associated movements.
Increasing your activity or intensity too quickly or exercising on an unfamiliar surface can cause a stress fracture. So can poor footwear or an increase in playing time. Stress fractures most commonly occur in the feet or lower legs.

What heel injuries occur in sports?
If you have pain in your heel, it’s likely either plantar fasciitis or a bruised heel. Plantar fasciitis is inflammation of the heel tendon and can be chronic and disabling, but rest, inserts, and physical therapy help. A bruised heel requires rest, shoe changes, and possibly a shock-absorbing insole.

What toe injuries do athletes experience?
Most athletic toe injuries, including black toenails and bruised toes, result from wearing the wrong size or type of shoe for your activity. The wear an athlete puts on their feet can also lead to ingrown toenails and hammertoe. You can also fracture or dislocate a toe. Broken and bruised toes may be splinted to reduce impact, while medication or rest can help with other issues.

What is athlete’s foot?
Athletes aren’t the only ones who get athlete’s foot, a fungal skin disease that usually occurs between the toes. The athlete’s foot fungus thrives in warm, moist conditions, so your feet provide a perfect environment. If you wear hot shoes and are often in locker rooms, swimming pools, or public showers, you’re at risk. The doctors at West Morris Foot and Ankle can offer effective treatment to relieve you of this persistent condition.
