Orthotics
What are orthotics?
Orthotics, or orthoses, are medical devices you wear to correct problems with your foot, ankle, or knee. Most people think of orthotics as the padded insoles you find at the pharmacy, but orthotic devices can include any of the following:
Foot pads
Simplest of all orthotics, foot pads are thin devices that help with pain at the front of your foot. You can put foot pads on the bottom of your foot or inside a shoe.
Shoe inserts
This group of orthotics includes insoles, arch supports, and footbeds you place inside your shoe. These inserts treat various issues, including arthritis and flat feet.
Ankle braces
These orthotics support your ankle and correct problems such as ankle arthritis and tendonitis. Ankle braces don’t fit into your shoe but go around your ankle instead.
What conditions can benefit from orthotics?
Orthotics help correct a variety of problems by providing alignment and support to your foot and ankle. Foot problems benefitting from orthotics include:
-
Bunions
-
High arch
-
Hammer toe or mallet toe
-
Plantar fasciitis
-
Flat feet
-
Runner’s knee
-
Diabetic foot problems
-
Uneven limb length deformities
What’s the difference between custom orthotics and store-bought orthotics?
While store-bought orthotics may seem appealing because of the price tag, the custom orthotics from West Morris Foot and Ankle have numerous advantages over store-bought ones, including:
-
Long-lasting
-
While the insoles you buy from a pharmacy may last a year or two, custom orthotics last up to 5 years, which makes them a better long-term investment.
-
-
Better fit
-
The doctors at West Morris Foot and Ankle use a digital scan of your foot to make your orthotics. Doing so ensures a comfortable fit that corrects your unique problem.
-
-
More support and alignment
-
Sometimes an inexpensive insole from the drugstore is all you need to correct a foot problem. However, if you’ve already tried this and it didn’t work, you may need the advanced support and correction from custom orthotics
